Curriculum

Our Academic Curriculum

At Coloma Convent Girls' School, our academic curriculum is inclusive, engaging, and thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of students with diverse learning abilities and aspirations. We strive to challenge and inspire every learner by offering a broad and balanced program that nurtures curiosity, fosters critical thinking, and supports personal growth. Our curriculum aims to empower all students—whether they excel academically, thrive in creative pursuits, or need additional support—to achieve their full potential and develop a lifelong love of learning.

All of our lessons are taught in 50 minute periods.

At Key Stage 3, students study core subjects (English, Mathematics, Religious Education and Science, including Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and an extensive array of humanities and arts subjects (Art & Design, Computer Science, Food Technology, Design & Technology, Drama, Languages, Geography, History, Music and Physical Education). Additionally, our Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) programme is taught as discreet lessons to highlight the importance of the content. Our students follow the Key Stage 3 curriculum in Years 7, 8 and 9.

Please see the subject information tab separate sections for a breakdown of the curriculum for each year group.

At Key Stage 4, our students’ curriculum consists of core, Ebaac and a very wide range of optional subjects, leading to GCSE qualifications in the four entitlement areas. Our students follow the Key Stage 4 curriculum in Years 10 and 11. Please also see the separate Subject Information sections for each Subject area.

Non-Examined Extended Core

Our Key Stage 4 students all follow a comprehensive, timetabled PSHE programme (including units of work on Citizenship, Sex and Relationships and Careers Education) and enjoy two hours of Physical Education every week.

Throughout their time at Coloma, students will also participate in Catholic Social Teaching which is interwoven in each lesson across Coloma.

Reading and literacy is also and very important aspect of Coloma. Please see the Literacy page to read up on our whole school approach to reading and literacy.

Challenging our KS4 Students at Coloma

Our rigorous and inclusive academic curriculum is thoughtfully designed to meet the diverse needs and interests of all our students. We encourage every student to engage with a Modern Foreign Language, and the majority pursue studies in all three Sciences. To further challenge our exceptionally able learners, we provide a range of exciting opportunities tailored to stretch their abilities. For instance, our most advanced mathematicians enrich their learning experience by studying GCSE Further Mathematics alongside GCSE Mathematics, preparing them for A-level and even undergraduate-level study.

Our academic Sixth Form curriculum prepares students for higher education (including study at Oxbridge and other world class universities) and high quality employment. We offer more than 20 A Level subjects plus an enhanced curriculum.

Please also see the Subject Information section and the Sixth Form area of the website for further information.

Targeted Interventions: For students who require additional support, we offer targeted interventions, including small group work, one-to-one sessions and access to specialist staff.

Learning Support: Our dedicated Learning Support team works closely with students with additional needs, providing tailored assistance such as in-class support, personalised learning plans and adjustments in assessments.

Technology and Resources: Where possible, we utilise technology and a range of accessible materials to enhance learning for all students, including those with specific educational needs or disabilities.

Pastoral Care: Recognising that emotional well-being is key to academic success, our pastoral team provides support to ensure students feel confident and ready to learn.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities: We offer a broad range of enrichment activities to deepen students’ engagement with the curriculum and support the development of key skills beyond the classroom.
