Physical Education and Sports is an educational process which aims to develop the whole person's development and performance whilst exploring specific knowledge, skills and understanding to to promote physical competence. Physical Education and Sports also has strong connections to developing our spiritual, moral, cultural and mental development.

The national curriculum for Physical Education and Sports aims to ensure that all pupils: develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and are physically active for sustained periods of time.  Engage in competitive sports and activities  and lead healthy, active lives.

Intent

During the programme of study at Key Stage 3 students will be provided with an extensive, innovative and well balanced curriculum of Physical Education and Sports through a range of different sports and activities. Lessons will allow students to become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across a variety of sports. Students should develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities through our extra- curricular programme allowing students to understand and apply the long-term health benefits of Physical Education and Sports and exercise.

In summary students will learn to;

• To provide a broad and well balanced programme of Physical Education and Sports

• To promote enjoyment and a sense of achievement at every level

• Develop the aesthetic and creative nature of each student

• To build the confidence of students to enable them to become decision makers

• To develop social awareness and values through interaction with others

• To take ownership of their own progression and be proactive in the development of others

• To promote an understanding of healthy lifestyles

• Encourage students to extend participation through extra-curricular activities

• Promoting an awareness of safe practice.

During the programme of study at Key Stage 4 (GCSE) students will develop knowledge, skills and understanding of a range of concepts covered by the specification including: applied anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, physical training, sports psychology, socio-cultural influences and health, fitness and well-being. These key concepts, fundamental to all aspects of physical education, will equip students with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values to develop and maintain their performance in physical activities and understand the benefits to health, fitness and well-being. Students are also assessed in their practical performance in three different physical activities in the role of player/performer and the analysis and evaluation of performance to bring about improvement in one activity. Additionally, students will acquire a valuable set of transferable skills in application and extended writing.

In summary students will learn to;

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport

  • Analyse and evaluate the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport

Design

In each unit we will ensure that all students develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts and are applying these routinely and embedding them overtime.  Throughout students gain confidence in applying more advanced skills, showing accurate technique and consistency within both isolated drills and competitive situations. Students will further develop an ability to evaluate and assess movements and sequences to produce refined outcomes. Leadership opportunities are facilitated to improve communication skills, teamwork, organisational skills and confidence. Students will be expected to lead warm-ups and some sports related drills as well as score and officiate within a range of different sports and activities.  An extensive extra-curricular programme will support the physical education programme to further enrich students' experiences.

Delivery

Students at Key Stage 3 will follow the National Curriculum for Physical Education and Sports receiving a 90 minute lesson a week allowing students to build on and embed the physical development, skills and knowledge from KS2.

Students will learn through two or three different activities each half term encouraging students to become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques and apply them across a range of different sports and physical activities. Lessons may involve teaching & learning of content, skills and technique development, student-led learning. Analyse and evaluate their own and others’ performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvements towards their personal best.

The theoretical aspect of physical training and applied anatomy and physiology underpins each practical lesson at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.  All students, regardless of whether they opt to study GCSE PE, will receive an hour of practical Physical Education. They will be provided with a range of sports to choose between in order to continue to develop a healthy, active lifestyle.

As an optional subject at Key Stage 4 & 5 Physical Education is a subject where students broaden their passion for participation and study of sport. Students will develop both depth and breadth of knowledge and skills in the wide range of sciences the course covers. Students will finish their GCSE study of Physical Education with a high competence in at least 3 different sports, a genuine interest in the physiological and psychological elements of sport, an understanding of the administration and structure of sporting opportunities for athletes and an ability to relate theoretical study to the practical environment.

The demands of the GCSE course prepare students for the expectation at A Level as there is a clear cross over between the two courses. Students may progress to a sport related degree course or a career in sporting professions; however, many students also go on to a diverse range of non-sport related careers including healthcare, social sciences, education and business management.
