Sociology

The study of GCSE sociology focuses on contemporary society. Studying sociology fosters the development of critical and reflective thinking with a respect for social diversity. It provides an awareness of the importance of social structure and social action in explaining social issues. Students are encouraged to develop their own sociological awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world.

In summary students will learn to; 

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts and evidence and sociological research methods. 

• Apply sociological theories, concepts, evidence and research methods to a range of issues.

• Analyse and evaluate sociological theories, concepts, evidence and research methods in order to present arguments, make judgements and draw conclusions.

What it leads to

As a critical subject, Sociology helps students to develop the skills to investigate and present a critical view of society. They can potentially play a big role in exposing and examining areas of inequality in society. Students will have opportunity to progress to A Levels in this subject. At higher education popular degree courses include criminology, education, international studies; however, many also pursue careers in areas as diverse as law, social work and management.  

Curriculum  Implementation 

Students will follow the specification for Sociology GCSE receiving 3 hours of lesson time a week.  

Lessons may involve teaching & learning of content, skills development, examination practice, discussions based on what is going on in the rest of the world, student presentations etc
