Curriculum Structure;
Key Stage 3:
In Key Stage 3, students are introduced to a wide range of artistic techniques and media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital art. They explore various art movements and cultural influences, developing their skills and understanding through project-based learning. Year 7-8 students have a double lesson of Art every week on a carousel system. Year 9 students have a double lesson of Art throughout the academic year.
Key Stage 4:
At Key Stage 4, students have the option to pursue GCSE Art & Design, where they refine their skills and focus on individual coursework projects based on a general theme of ‘Identity’. They are encouraged to experiment with different materials and processes, and to develop their own artistic style. In January of Year 11 students engage in an externally set examination, which prepares them for Post-16 education.
Key Stage 5:
For those continuing into Key Stage 5, we offer A-Level Art & Design, which provides an in-depth study of art practices. Students engage in more complex projects, including personal investigations and externally set assignments, preparing them for higher education and careers in the creative industries.
Teaching Methods;
Practical Workshops: Our teaching approach includes hands-on practical workshops where students can explore and experiment with different artistic techniques. These workshops are designed to build technical proficiency and encourage creative risk-taking.
Critical Studies: Students are also engaged in critical studies, analysing the work of various artists across time and place. This theoretical component helps them to contextualise their own work and understand the broader cultural and historical significance of art.
Individual and Group Projects: Both individual and group projects are integral to our curriculum. These projects promote collaboration, communication, and the sharing of ideas, while also allowing students to develop their unique creative voices.
Formative Assessment: Students are continuously assessed through practical work, sketchbooks, and written evaluations. This ongoing assessment helps to monitor progress and point of learning feedback to maximise progress.
Exhibitions and Displays: We regularly hold exhibitions and displays of student work, both within the school and in the wider community. These events provide valuable opportunities for students to showcase their achievements and gain confidence in their artistic abilities.
Workshops and Masterclasses: We offer clubs and masterclasses led by practising artists and industry professionals. These sessions provide students with insights into contemporary art practices and career pathways.
Cultural Visits: Cultural visits to galleries, museums, and art institutions are an essential part of our programme. These trips enrich students' understanding of art and provide inspiration for their own work
Competitions and Collaborations: Students are encouraged to participate in art competitions and collaborative projects, both locally and nationally. These opportunities help to broaden their horizons and build a sense of community and achievement.
Through a well-rounded and dynamic approach to Art & Design education, Coloma Convent Girls' School is committed to developing the artistic talents and critical thinking skills of our students, preparing them for future success in an ever-evolving creative landscape.
