Nature of Subject

The PE Department aims to inspire and motivate our students to engage actively in all lessons and extra-curricular activities in order to instill a lifelong love of Physical Education and Sport whereby students strive to be the best they can be.

PE at Coloma nurtures the physical, emotional, and social development of every student. Through a rich and inclusive curriculum, we equip students with the skills, confidence and knowledge to lead healthy, active lives and enjoy lifelong participation in physical activity.

Our provision follows the National Curriculum which fosters:

  • Physical competence and technical skill
  • Leadership, resilience and teamwork
  • An understanding of healthy lifestyles and well-being
  • Positive attitudes through inclusive, competitive, and cooperative sport

Intent

We aim to inspire all students to:

  • Enjoy and succeed in a wide range of physical activities
  • Develop competence and confidence across core sports and movement disciplines
  • Understand the importance of physical health, fitness, and mental well-being
  • Build character and social values such as fairness, respect, and responsibility
  • Extend learning through leadership, officiating, and extra-curricular involvement

Design

Key Stage 3 – Year 7 Explore, Year 8 Develop, Year 9 Embed
Students experience a broad and balanced curriculum, developing transferable physical skills and tactical understanding across:

  • Invasion games (Netball, Football, Rugby, Lacrosse)
  • Net and wall games (Badminton, Tennis)
  • Aesthetic performance (Dance, Trampolining)
  • Striking and fielding (Rounders, Cricket)
  • Athletics and Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA)

Skills progression is mapped across year groups to build competence, apply tactics and develop evaluative thinking.

Key Stage 4 Core PE
All students continue with two weekly PE lessons focused on health, fitness, and applied sport. The curriculum promotes lifelong engagement through participation and challenge.

Key Stage 4 GCSE PE (AQA)
An academic and practical course covering:

  • Anatomy & physiology, Training principles, Sports psychology and Socio-cultural influences
  • Practical performance in three sports
  • Coursework analysing and evaluating personal performance

Key Stage 5 A Level PE (AQA)
An academic and practical course covering:

  • Anatomy & physiology, Skill acquisition, Sport and society, Exercise physiology and biomechanics, Sport psychology, Sport and society and technology in sport
  • Practical performance in one sport
  • Coursework analysing and evaluating personal performance

BTEC SPORT Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport
A practical, coursework-based qualification equivalent to one A Level.
Four Units - Unit 1 Anatomy & Physiology. Unit 2 Fitness Training and programming for Health. Unit 3 Sport and Well-being and Professional development in the Sports Industry. Unit 4 - Set by the centre to suit the needs of learners
Units 1 and 2 are externally assessed via an examination
Units 3 and 4 are internally assessed via assignment based work

Delivery 

Students engage in lessons and extra-curricular activities designed to foster participation, skill development, leadership, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles. The curriculum is delivered through practical performance, theoretical understanding, and opportunities for leadership, officiating, and extended learning.
