At Coloma Convent Girls' School (CCGS) we pride ourselves in providing the highest quality of education to our students which is integral in succeeding in our mission. We seek to ensure that all our students are happy and safe at Coloma and are able to learn successfully within a supportive environment.

Aims:

To ensure that there is a robust and common approach to Teaching and Learning across Coloma, our pedagogy and practice is underpinned by our values and virtues of our school. Below we have shared how the values and virtues are reflected in our curriculum and in the Teaching and Learning across the school.

Virtues values

We recognise each student as a unique individual, created in the image of God, and provide a safe, secure, and caring environment in which to learn and grow.

  • An ethos of respect, understanding, cooperation, and consideration underpins exceptional attitudes to learning.
  • Our inclusive and personalised curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of all learners, helping them make outstanding progress both academically and personally.
  • At Coloma, we are all teachers of Numeracy, Literacy, and Reading, skills that empower students to access the curriculum, achieve academically, and live lives enriched by literature and an understanding of number.

We foster resilience and determination, encouraging students to embrace challenge and strive for excellence.

  • We promote hard work and discipline as essential for success.
  • Teaching and learning are constantly reviewed and developed, offering support, stretch, and challenge for all.
  • Students are exposed to challenging texts, content, and subject matter, underpinned by disciplinary literacy.

Teachers incorporate and trial a broad range of teaching styles, enhancing both teaching and learning across the school.

Christ is at the centre of all we do. Our curriculum reflects the Church’s moral and social teaching and invites students to encounter Christ in every subject.

  • Religious Education enables pupils to relate theological knowledge to their understanding of other subjects.
  • Pupils are encouraged to deepen their religious and theological understanding and communicate it effectively.
  • We provide the knowledge, understanding, and skills to reflect spiritually, think ethically and theologically, and recognise the demands of religious commitment in everyday life.

We hold consistently high expectations for every member of the Coloma community, nurturing excellence in all areas of learning.

  • Courses offer challenge in content and delivery, supported by ambitious targets.
  • Our curriculum builds on prior knowledge, sequences learning effectively, and supports smooth transitions to the next stage.
  • Students regularly engage in retrieval practice, building schema and applying knowledge to new contexts.
  • We offer a broad and balanced curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5, matched to students’ needs, interests, and aspirations.
  • Teaching is adapted to offer appropriate challenge for all learners, ensuring every student can flourish.

Right to Withdraw Your Child from Sex Education

At Coloma Convent Girls’ School, we are committed to delivering high-quality Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) that supports the spiritual, moral, and emotional development of every pupil, in line with our Catholic ethos and statutory guidance.

What You Cannot Withdraw From

Parents cannot withdraw their child from:

  • Health Education
  • The Relationships Education component of RSE

These elements are compulsory and essential for all students. They include learning about friendships, personal safety, mental wellbeing, and respectful relationships. These topics are vital for helping young people navigate life with confidence and compassion.

What You Can Withdraw From

Parents do have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of the Sex Education delivered as part of statutory RSE in secondary school.

  • This request should be made in writing to the Headteacher.
  • The Headteacher will discuss the request with you and will grant it in all but exceptional circumstances.
  • This right applies up until three school terms before your child turns 16.

After this point, if your child wishes to receive Sex Education, they have the right to opt in, and the school will arrange for them to participate during one of those three terms (unless exceptional circumstances apply).

We encourage open dialogue with parents and carers to ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the child, with respect for family values and our shared commitment to their wellbeing and formation.

Remote Education Provision

At Coloma Convent Girls’ School, we are committed to ensuring continuity of learning for all students in the event of absence due to medical reasons, short or long-term school closures, or any other circumstances where remote learning is required. Our remote education provision also supports homework and independent study.

Learning resources and assignments will be uploaded to Google Classroom or sent via Edulink. These platforms allow students to access lesson materials, submit work, and receive feedback from their teachers.

If you experience any difficulties accessing remote learning, please contact your Key Stage Coordinator, who will liaise with the Head of Year and relevant Heads of Department to ensure appropriate support is provided.
